Understand Before You Commit
Do an online search of the benefits of coaching and you will receive pages upon pages of results. However, as good as it is to know what others have found to be beneficial, what matters is how it works for you. It is the connection of trust that is established with your coach, the type of programs offered, and your earnest effort to do the work that will make your experience positive.
Ultimately, what matters is you and the best approach to help you achieve your goals.
Best advice I ever got, hire a coach." Eric Schmidt, CEO Google.
• Many successful business figures work with a coach.
• Top athletes have a coach.
• The person seeking a better life hires a coach.
• Coaches have a coach.
Coaching is for anyone receptive and prepared to do the work—from the stay-at-home parent to the corporate executive.
On the personal side, coaching guides an individual to the life that brings the highest sense of peace and purpose. Sometimes, it is to help navigate a setback or to work through emotions on the path to healing. Other times, it is to discover what is next in their life. Coaching helps increase resilience and positivity, so progress doesn't stall during transitions or distress.
In business, leaders find it productive to have a partner they can trust to work through transitions, challenges, and goal attainment in a proprietary setting. Coaches help business leaders create a trajectory to reach their vision.
No matter the reason, many people recognize the benefits of coaching to attain positive change, greater satisfaction, increased productivity, and goal achievement.

Each person or group responds differently to coaching; thus, there is no set expectation. Instead, there are various emotions — excitement at making progress and relief to address issues set aside or stifled. Some individuals feel nervous about showing vulnerability or frustration when facing a setback. Almost always, there is a sense of fulfillment when a milestone or a goal is reached.
You will benefit greatly by preparing ahead of time for each session. Know what goal you want to achieve during your time together, create a distraction-free environment, and stay focused.
NEVER feel dread or stress about your coaching sessions. It happens. Sometimes, a client cannot complete an assignment in time for their follow-up meeting and might feel embarrassed, discouraged, ashamed, or even cancel. A coach will never judge. A coach's role is to support and guide you toward removing obstacles. You should feel a sense of safety during your time together and be encouraged to express your authentic emotions, no matter how vulnerable you may feel. The most important thing is that you are taking action! That is always the first step to change.

Five Steps Before Deciding on a Coach
1
EDUCATE YOURSELF
Gain an understanding of what coaching is versus what it is not. Understand the process, the time and financial commitments, and the requirements that will be placed upon you. Then, explore your options.
2
DETERMINE YOUR GOALS
Have a clear understanding of what you want to achieve, being as specific as possible. Be honest about the effort you are willing to put forth. Attainable
3
PLAN YOUR BUDGET
If you cannot afford a coach, there are programs (like Attainable) that can be used in a self-directed format. Although I strongly encourage you to invest in an accountability partner, which is one of the primary roles of a coach. It will be helpful to read the post in Mindset Musings titled Can You Benefit from an Accountability Partner?
4
GATHER SUPPORTERS
You will be more likely to succeed if you are surrounded by a strong support system. If that is not currently possible, look for programs that immerse you with others striving for the same goal or a similar goal.
5
CONDUCT INTERVIEWS
You will be working closely in an open and engaging manner with your coach. Therefore, it is important the approach he or she takes, their style of communication, the programs offered, and more align with your preferred style of interaction.
6
GET A CONTRACT!
Once you have selected your coach, you should expect to receive a New Client Packet and contract outlining the process, the goals, and the terms. Only after both parties have agreed and signed should you engage with a coach.
Ask Me Anything
